Modernising the platform the business reports on

MMG, a globally diversified, mid-tier mining operator with more than 5,500 people worldwide, runs its group reporting, executive insight and regulatory disclosure on SAP. With a major ERP upgrade and S/4HANA migration on the horizon, the analytics platform supporting that needed to be modernised first. PCL IT upgraded MMG's SAP Business Warehouse and migrated its critical business reporting from SAP Lumira to SAP Analytics Cloud — delivered on time, under budget, and with zero incidents across the SAP landscape.

A globally diversified mining operator

MMG competes on asset quality, scale and geographic diversification — long-life, tier-one copper mines and integrated zinc operations, with growth tied to recycling capital into high-return projects. Across that global footprint sit more than 5,530 employees, and the business is dependent on SAP to enable comprehensive group reporting, spanning all major business processes: the management and executive insight behind regulatory disclosure, daily operations and decision-making.

The challenge

Preparing a critical platform for what's next

MMG relies deeply on an enterprise SAP Business & Analytics Warehouse. A review aligned to the company's strategic direction found a real business risk in not upgrading the critical data and analytics platform. With a major ERP upgrade and S/4HANA migration on the horizon, the existing landscape had to be streamlined and prepared. The requirement was two-fold: upgrade SAP Business Warehouse (BW) to Support Package Stack (SPS) 34 for operational stability and migration readiness; and establish a new SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC) environment and migrate all critical SAP Lumira reporting into it.

Three critical measures of success had to hold: the BW SPS upgrade completed cleanly; every Lumira report migrated to SAC on a live connection; and the whole programme delivered with the rigour of SAP Activate, run through MMG's own Project Management Office — enforcing discipline well beyond go-live.

What we did

SAP Activate, run with discipline

PCL IT's project team delivered the programme on the SAP Activate methodology, combining pre-configured, best-practice content with guided configuration and an agile-capable framework. The team accelerated delivery instead of building process from scratch, leveraging a phased structure — Discover, Prepare, Explore, Realize, Deploy, Run — that gave a consistent, repeatable backbone while still allowing agile iteration, and fit neatly inside MMG's existing project-management governance.

The key was disciplined delivery. Scope, risks and issues were agreed and owned up front. Early and continuous engagement with the business sponsor maintained high confidence throughout, supported by regular technical and business stand-ups and clear reporting to stakeholders. Drawing on a global delivery team, every technical and business item in scope was delivered — and in several areas, exceeded. With the upgraded technical framework in place, the critical dashboards and visualisations were analysed, rebuilt and migrated across to SAP Analytics Cloud on live data connections.

The results

The year closed cleanly, and the platform is ready

Delivered on time, with reporting at the agreed stakeholder cadence and hyper-care through a critical month-end processing cycle to confirm success. Along the way, infrastructure inconsistencies were identified and remediated — extra value that made better use of MMG's existing technology investment. The 4.8 / 5 review score spanned budget control, planning and testing thoroughness, stakeholder engagement, and project-management governance.
